He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘When you pray, say:
Father,* hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.*
Give us each day our daily bread.*
And forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial.‘ –Luke 11:1-4
One of the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray and he responded with the Lord’s Prayer. We say and sometimes sing, the Lord’s Prayer every Sunday. Have you thought about the words we pray? The Sunday morning Bible Study Class has been exploring the Lord’s Prayer line by line. We heard different variations and each week we discussed one line with Kate, our Student Pastor. We were challenged to say the Lord’s Prayer three times a day. The last piece was to write the Lord’s Prayer in our own words. It was a sacred experience.
I invite you to have a sacred conversation with God. Sitting in stillness and writing the Lord’s Prayer in your own words is a connection. Praise and prayer requests become personal.
Holy Spirit, our creator and sustainer;
Come closer, be with us and celebrate your presence
From sunrise to sunset, let us know you are near.
Bring peace where there is hurt from one another,
Show us hope when we are tempted to turn away from you.
Help us to find joy when discouragement surrounds us.
We give thanks for your divine love now and forever more.
Amen
