Give us this day our daily bread…
When Jesus spoke these words the tendency is to think of food to nourish the body. If we look deeper the prayer also asks God to give us wisdom to guide us through the day. Each day presents challenges to get the required done. What nurtures us to thrive and be productive?
I know when a cardinal visits my yard I feel blessed by the sacred. There is something about this beautiful bird that arrives that connects me to the divine. The imagery of this sacred messenger feeds my soul. I always feel uplifted when this visitor chooses my yard.
When a beautiful sunset appears, the joy of a painting in the sky feeds me. I am in awe when I stop to absorb the magnitude of the universe.
What possibilities lie in the bread of compassion? Listening to someone going through a tough time is sharing the bread of goodness. It is a gift to be present to those who need someone to be there.
Jesus taught us in his daily works, the bread of life. Perhaps this why he reminds us in communion, “Do this in remembrance of me”. As we eat this broken bread we are nourished.
Thank you God, for these moments, of filling the bread and cup of wonder.
