“Give us this day our daily bread”
A hymn I wrote in 1997: “Our Daily Bread”
We come to you, Christ, to be made whole,
to fill the hunger deep in our souls.
We come to pray that we may be fed:
Give us this day our daily bread.
We hunger for hope, we yearn for love,
line manna sent to earth from above.
The Bread of Life, the word you have said:
Give us this day our daily bread.
Your harvest is rich, abundant wheat,
yet children beg for one loaf to eat.
Teach us to share your bounty instead:
Give us this day our daily bread.
May we be your gardeners, planting seed;
may we be bakers, your bread to knead.
Our hands a prayer that all may be fed:
Give us this day our daily bread.
O God, may we pray with our hands, planting seed, making bread, feeding our neighbors. Amen.
