“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
Spiritual Practice: Self Care in Troubled Times
Many of us are feeling the weight of our political and social systems in a unique way during this time of unrest. Many of us want to help out in some way, but it can feel overwhelming at times. Here are some tips to keep us healthy and centered.
1. Take time to care for yourself.
This is not an excuse to engage in “retail therapy”, but an invitation to spend quality time with yourself and those you love. The world needs you at your best.
2. You are not alone.
We are not solo singers in the work of justice for God’s Kin(g)dom, but rather a chorus. Have faith that when you rest, others will pick up. When someone needs to rest, pick up for them.
3.Build relationships and community.
We need them more than ever for support. Reach out and make connections with friends who share your causes and activism. Reach out and make connections with people who live near you. Reach out and make connections within your generation, race, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation…and try and reach out and make connections with those that don’t.
4. Develop a spiritual practice
Whether it’s a gratitude journal, meditation, lectio divina, prayer beads, or bible study. You don’t have to do everything, but you should do something.
