Lenten Devotional by Dawn Sorensen

Safe Space, Brave Space…for me, it is the idea is that when you have a place that feels safe, a sanctuary, it allows you to be brave in the big wide world. It’s easy to be brave in church when the friends and family sitting next to you are there supporting you, in person. It gets much harder to imagine safe space when you’re alone, in a crowd of strangers, or speaking out in front of people who disagree.
But our supporters are bigger than just those people we can see. The number of people who are with us, those who believe in us and those who believe in what we stand for, they are legion. We just have to remember. Our best friend who lives miles away, our parents, our children. People whom we’ve lived life with over the years. People we’ve never known but those who fought dreaming that we could be exactly where we are right now. They are the communion of saints who have gone before us. On their shoulders we stand. For me, I find strength studying people like Sojourner Truth, Audre Lorde, and Leslie Feinberg. We carry their strength with us. We are together, even when the world feels fractured. May you remember your saints, your sanctuary people today. May they send you love, light, and lots of blessings exactly when you need them most. You are fighting the good fight very well, I’m proud to know each of you. Peace.
