A Maundy Thursday Devotion by Dawn Sorensen
And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”
Luke 22:15-20
We have amazing young people here at Edwards Church. Each one of them is full of enthusiasm. Full of thoughtful ways to be together as God would want us to be. Full of awe and wonder at the world God’s hands have made.
When I interviewed for the position of student pastor all those years ago, someone asked me what my beliefs were regarding children taking communion. I had no idea then that I was supposed to have “beliefs”. Why would anyone deny communion to a child? I wasn’t even aware there were people out there who would contemplate such a thing.
This church has a long history of welcome, and welcome comes in so many ways. I’m proud to know that our welcome of people of all ages comes from a place of being in communion with one another, where every single one of us has a place at the table.
God, thank you for welcoming us at your table. Thank you for providing life-giving bread and life-sustaining friendships that cross the generations. Amen
