A Lenten Devotion by Paul Blow
Remember the days of old;
Deuteronomy: 32:7
Consider the years of many generations;
ask your father, and he will show you,
your elders, and they will tell you.
Trees transgress time. They connect us to history and make “what was”, very real. They are living memory.
This is the Armada Tree, located in Larne, Northern Ireland. Legend has it, that it sprouted from the chestnut seed of a buried Spanish sailor who was found on the sea shore following the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Sailors kept chestnuts on themselves to ward off scurvy. You stand next to it and you feel its age.
For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth, like trees, endureth to all generations. Amen.
Last line from Psalm 100, slightly modified.😊
