The Green Team invites you to try two things to “green up” your world this summer:
- Get green from the comfort of home—join us for a summer book group: The Green Team has chosen a summer read for a more personal take on the intersection of environmentalism and anti-racism, and you are invited to join us. The book is The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature (2017) by J. Drew Lanham. According to National Geographic, The Home Place is a “lyrical story about the power of the wild…(it) synthesizes J. Drew Lanham’s own family history, geography, nature, and race into a compelling argument for conservation and resilience.” It is available on Amazon in paperback and as an e-book; unfortunately, you can’t get it through the Minuteman library system right now. Several members of the Green Team are ordering copies—if you have difficulty getting one let us know and we can figure out a way to share books in a “socially distant” way. We will schedule an online book discussion for the end of July/beginning of August. If you would like to participate, please email Mary Memmott or call her at 508-202-2229) so she can include you in the planning for the date and time.
- Get green by getting dirty—help us with work hours at Stearns Farm: Once again, Edwards Church has two shares of produce from Stearns Farm that we are delivering to Hope Pantry for weekly distribution to those in need. The need this summer is great, and these fresh vegetables are very much appreciated. We have a wonderful group of volunteers already signed up to do the food deliveries. But as part of our farm share, we still need to do some work hours on the farm. Work shifts are available from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the farm (Edmands Road in Framingham) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Children under seventeen must be accompanied by an adult; the minimum age is eight (but consider carefully whether your child is up for two hours of field work—middle-school age children and older usually manage better than younger ones). You need to sign up in advance so the farmer can make sure social distancing rules are followed; contact Mary Memmott for more information.
