As we seek to be loving, connected, inclusive and safe as a community, we are taking a “layered” approach—layers of protection. One layer is that the vast majority of our congregation has already been vaccinated. Another layer is that we are doing as much as we can outdoors. A third layer is the Zoom option for almost everything we do. A fourth layer is our efforts to ensure good air quality and circulation in our buildings. A fifth layer is wearing masks when we are indoors in a group. No one of those layers is sufficient; when we put them together their efficacy is multiplied.
I have found the “layering” metaphor helpful as I seek to keep myself safe and ensure I am being responsible to my neighbors. My personal layers are similar to the church’s: vaccination (and a booster when I am eligible), masking in indoor public spaces, spending lots of time outdoors, avoiding large crowds of people I don’t know. Lately, I have been adding another layer: once a week, I go downtown for a free COVID-19 test. It takes about five minutes (a half hour with travel time), and it gives me an added layer of security. It is also a way I can contribute to the data scientists need to understand how the virus spreads. It doesn’t take away the need for any of the other layers, but it gives me added confidence that I am being responsible to my neighbors, friends, and fellow congregation members.
I invite you to join me in adding that extra layer of protection. If you are unsure where to go and how to make it happen, email me and I’ll help. We can even schedule tests for the same time and meet there or carpool!
