“You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all”
–2 Cor. 3:2
Dear friends,
The children have moved their church calendar to the purple season of Lent, when we prepare for the arrival of Holy Week and the celebration of Easter. This year, we’re learning about the important signs of discipleship with the theme of “Traveling together toward Easter.”
Thinking about those signs reminds me of the many signs we have around our church campus up at Edwards.
There’s the big wooden one on Elm Street that points up the hill to the church building. We also have a rainbow banner on the side of Jonathan House that tells about our welcome and a Black Lives Matter sign posted in the heart of the campus as a message of justice. The heart that stands at the top of the hill as you enter communicates the spirit of our community.
But the most important signs around our church community aren’t the ones we post up on the hill, but are our words and actions. They tell the world far more about who we are as disciples of Jesus and a community of faith that we call Edwards Church. As the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, we, ourselves, are the “sign” as a congregation “to be known and read by all.”
As we travel through Lent this month, Christian Explorers, and all of us, will learn about some of those signs that tell the world we are followers of Jesus Christ. Words and actions that show we are:
- To love and be loved;
- To be welcoming and offer hospitality;
- To be a source for healing;
- To work for justice; and
- To share the good news of God’s
If you were a “sign,” what would you want your life to communicate to the world? Join us on our Lenten journey to share and show about what it means to a disciple, following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ as we travel together toward Easter.
In peace, Karen Nell
