Dear friends,
With a mixture of sadness, gratitude, and respect, I am writing to let you know that Rick Seaholm is stepping down from his role as Commissioned Minister of Music. He has served us with amazing grace, passion and dedication for over 14 years. He has brought deep love for music and even deeper love for the people of our congregation to everything he has done. In the last three years, as we pivoted first to worshipping on-line and then to creating hybrid worship, he has brought both his technological skill and his music gifts to us. He has been a valued and faithful member of our team.
I am sad, for I will miss working with him as my colleague. I am grateful, for the gifts he has given to our church have enriched us so much. I have deep respect for his thoughtfulness and care in making this decision, a choice to find balance and be able to spend more time with family and friends.
At the suggestion of the chair of the Music Committee, the Diaconate discussed the idea of honoring Rick by making him Commissioned Minister of Music Emeritus. Emeritus is an honorary title that acknowledges a legacy of faithful, creative service. It is not a staff or paid position, and it does not involve any responsibilities. It does allow space for occasional opportunities to offer a special creative gift (always in conversation and collaboration with staff members).
The Diaconate was unanimous in their enthusiasm for this idea. In accordance with the by-laws, they will bring a recommendation to the congregation at our next congregational meeting, which is September 17. Be sure to come and vote! If the congregation affirms the proposal, we will find an appropriate time to honor Rick by conferring this new title upon him.
In the meantime, members of our Music Committee and choir will begin reflecting on what we envision for our music ministry in the coming years, and how we can find the best professionals to support us. In the meantime, we are grateful for Susan and Cheryl and every person who offers music.
Thank you to Rick for his gifts and faithfulness and love.
Peace, Debbie
