For the Lenten season, the Environmental Justice Team is focusing on the theme of “civic engagement.” This is the natural follow-up to our winter read, Reclaiming Our Democracy, by Sam Daley-Harris.
As Mr. Daley-Harris says in his book, “So many of the technological innovations needed to address the problems we face already exist; what’s lacking is the social innovations required to generate the political will to implement them.”
To generate political will, we need to get active!
One thing you can do to “activate” yourself is to join the Edwards Church Action Alerts email list. This group is moderated by Mary Memmott from the Environmental Justice Team, but open to all. It is a google group for posting or receiving messages about opportunities to stand up against injustice and for a more equitable, inclusive, democratic, and environmentally sound world. These include political actions, in-person or through contacting elected officials.
If you have questions, please email Mary Memmott at memmottm@gmail.com. The email for the group is edwards-action-alerts@googlegroups.com.
The other offering we have for Lent is the chance to get support in eating a more plant-based diet.
We enjoyed delicious vegan soups and snacks at our winter book discussion – another reminder of how a plant-based diet can be good for the body as well as the planet. Laura Beck from the Environmental Justice Team is offering coaching and support to anyone who would like to learn more; you contact her at ljbVeganMentor@gmail.com.
