Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)
I’ve always been somewhat of an activist, wanting to stand up for the underdog. When I started to just barely understand climate change, I got involved. And when I first became vegan, my activism got turbo charged.
But today, right now, in this world, it is a whole different realm of activism. I have found that I cannot just sit idly by, watching as others’ rights are taken away. I have had to learn activism on steroids.
Politically speaking, I have never been to a stand out, a rally, or a protest. So, the first one I attended was fairly scary. But…the empowerment I felt being part of such a large group of folks, all trying to raise their voices together for the greater good of us all, was super affirming. Even though I didn’t see anyone I knew there, I didn’t feel alone. I felt part of a bigger community with a common goal.
Since that first protest, I have been to a few more. On two occasions, I saw/sat/stood with folks from the Edwards Church community. That made it even better, being part of something bigger with people I actually know.
If you are feeling alone, desperate, hopeless or futile right now, there is nothing more affirming than getting involved. (Please reach out to me, and I will give you tons of different ways to do that.) I have come to realize that I don’t have to do everything. I do what I can do and then count on the next person to do their part, and working together, we will lift up the whole.
Heavenly Father, please watch over us during these trying times. Help us to know when to stand up and do our part and when to take time for self-care and rejuvenation, so that together, we can do what seems impossible alone.
