In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’–Mark 1:9-11
The song “Deep River,” that the choir sang on March 9, occupies a special place in my heart with both deep meaning and wide appreciation.
During the choir rehearsal leading up to singing the anthem, I noted this to the choir. Imprinted in my memory is an earlier choir rehearsal of the song – on January 16th, 2020. That particular rehearsal meant so much to me as I was among friends to help me grieve the death of my wife, Barbara, who “passed over to campground” that morning. Some were amazed that I attended that rehearsal; my comment was that if I wasn’t there I would be at my personal pity party. I really appreciated the other choir members more than usual that night.
I hope to continue sharing what musical talents I have with them and the entire beloved Edwards Church community. It means the world to me.
Bless us, O God, that when we enter into the deep water of faith and love and community, we might hear your voice, assuring us that we are beloved. Amen.
